Leading Cambodian internet provider Telcotech signed an agreement on Monday with two telecommunications companies, Symphony Communication of Thailand and Telekom Malaysia Berhad, to build the country's first undersea communications cable, according to latest news statement.
The construction of the Malaysia-Cambodia-Thailand submarine cable system will "bring faster, more affordable broadband to the people of Cambodia and connect the country to the rest of the world like never before", said the statement released at the signing ceremony.
According to the statement, the project, estimated to cost no more than 70 million U.S. dollars, will be operational by the end of 2016.
The planned 1,300 km submarine cable system will connect Cambodia to Malaysia, passing through Thailand on the way, it said. When completed, it will mark the first time in history for Cambodia to be connected to the region by submarine cable.
"The MCT (Multi Cable Transit) cable system will connect Cambodia with its neighbors by undersea cable for the first time," the statement said. "This link will usher in a new era of connectivity, with faster speeds and improved service leading to greater broadband penetration and better access to digital information and services for all."
The system, which will utilize state-of-the-art 100 gigabit per second (Gbps) technology and has a design capacity of at least 30 Terabytes per second (Tbps), is expected to be the catalyst for new business growth not only in Cambodia, but also in the surrounding region.
"As the ASEAN community prepares to draw even closer together this year, links like the MCT project will make it easier for people across the region to connect with each other in new and creative ways," said Telcotech CEO Paul Blanche-Horgan.
Somchai Treerattananukool, 1st senior vice president of Symphony Communication of Thailand, said the MCT cable system will give a great benefit not only to Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand, but also to surrounding countries in ASEAN.
"I am confident that MCT cable system will uphold our region's telecommunication business with high level of efficiency and we will enter the new chapter of telecommunication cooperation in ASEAN," he said. Endi
