Botswana women defeat Kenya in Olympic qualifier

Xinhua, May 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Botswana women soccer team defeated their Kenyan counterparts 2-1 in the first leg match of the 2016 Olympic qualifiers played at the town of Lobatse in Southern Botswana on Friday afternoon.

The home side started the better side of the two with attacking play and they were duly rewarded with two goals before the halftime break. Botswana pressed the visitors in their own half and went 2-0 up courtesy of goals from Refilwe Tholakele and Lesego Keleboge.

They continued where they left off after the break but Kenya soon found their footing in the game. The team however had to wait until injury time to score a goal that may prove to be crucial going into the second leg.

Botswana defended deeply in the dying minutes of the game, allowing Kenya to score a crucial away goal on the 93rd minute.

The two sides will meet in the second leg of the qualifiers in Nairobi in a fortnight. Speaking to the media after the game, Botswana coach Gaoletlhoo Nkutlwisang said they still have a lot of work to do in the second leg to remain in the competition. She lamented loss of concentration time for Kenya's goal, saying they did not want to concede at home.

She said she however remained confident that they will go through to the next stage of the qualifiers. Endite
