Police in Vietnam's central Ha Tinh on Tuesday prosecuted two South Koreans for "violating regulation on labor safety" in a deadly scaffolding collapse in Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation (FHS) construction site earlier in March.
At around 20:00 p.m. local time (GMT1300) on March 25, a scaffold collapsed in Vung Ang port construction site, part of FHS 's huge iron and steel project in Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh province, some 350 km south of capital Hanoi.
The accident left 14 workers dead and 28 others injured.
The two South Koreans are Kim Jong Wook (43), who worked as commander of production site of at Son Duong deep-water wharf of Vung Ang port, and Lee Jae Myeong (62), managing director of workers in the to-be-collapsed scaffold.
According to initial investigation result of local authority, before the incident, Kim went up to the Lane 2 scaffold to check. However, he did not instruct workers to stop working when detecting dangerous risks.
When the Lane 2 scaffold showed signs of shaking hard, workers ran away to inform Lee about dangers. Lee went up to examine but required workers to continue working, causing such serious consequences.
Based on investigation result and documents collected at the site, Ha Tinh provincial police have released a decision to prosecute the case as well as prosecute Kim and Lee, reported Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA.
The project, invested by the Formosa group from China's Taiwan and licensed in 2008, aims to build the largest iron and steel plant with a deep-water port in Southeast Asia within land lease duration of 70 years. Endi
