GMS countries strengthen cooperation on drug control

Xinhua, May 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Senior officials of the signatories to the 1993 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) on drug control gathered in Vietnam's capital Hanoi on Tuesday to discuss measures to strengthen cooperation on drug control.

In the past 20 years, the cooperation mechanism on drug control among Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has become a major regional forum which positively contributes to the fight against drug, said Phan Van Vinh, head of the general department of Vietnam police under ministry of public security.

GMS countries have set up a unified mechanism with high commitment and determination among governments and supports from international organizations, especially the UNODC, according to the website of Vietnamese government.

The two-day event will offer opportunities for countries to share experiences in drug control and map out new directions for the work, as well as increase effectiveness of the mechanism, Vinh said.

In 1993, the cooperation mechanism called MoU on drug control cooperation was signed by four nations namely, Myanmar, China, Laos and Thailand, through the coordination of the United Nations International Drug Control Program (UNDCP), which is now UNODC.

The cooperation was extended with Cambodia and Vietnam by signing the same agreement in 1995. Endi
