Tokyo shares end higher with Nikkei holding 20,000 line

Tokyo shares ended Tuesday higher with Nikkei index holding the 20,000-point line after three weeks, as sentiment here was boosted by optimism over domestic companies' earnings and upbeat performance of overseas market.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average jumped 136.11 points, or 0. 68 percent, higher from Monday to 20,026.38.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 6.67 points, or 0.41 percent, to 1,633. 33.

Gainers were led by securities, fishery and agriculture, and foods issues.

The turnover was about 2,713.7 billion yen (about 22.62 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
