Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic arrived here on Monday for a visit, the first such by a Serbian president since the 1991 disintegration of Yugoslavia.

Nikolic, who was welcomed at the airport by Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra, praised Cuba's efforts to defend its independence and sovereignty, and described the Serbia-Cuba relations as "excellent", the Prensa Latina agency reported.

Nikolic is scheduled to hold talks Tuesday with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro. Earlier in May, they met in Moscow during Russian celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.

The Cuba-Serbia diplomatic relationship dates back to as early as 1943.Since 2010, both countries have expanded cooperation in such fields as trade, industry, energy, health and biotechnology. Endi
