The intensity and frequency of aftershocks following the second major jolt on May 12 have decreased significantly though tremors of negligible magnitude are still occurring, Nepal's seismological authority said on Tuesday.
A total of 242 aftershocks of over four-magnitude have been monitored since the April 25 earthquake, the National Seismological Center said.
The destructive quake has claimed more than 8,600 lives and left more than 100,000 others injured, while damaging nearly 760, 000 houses across the Himalayan country, according to the latest update of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Seismologists said that aftershocks are a normal occurrence after big earthquakes and they will gradually decrease with time.
Large-scale relief operations have been going on in the country with the help of the international community. The Nepalese government has contributed 200 million U.S. dollars to set up a National Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Fund for the long-term reconstruction process.
Prime Minister Sushil Koirala also urged the international community and donor agencies to contribute 1.8 billion U.S. dollars to the fund, saying "The disaster has made enormous damage to the national economy and social structures and it's very difficult to tackle the reconstruction challenges."
