Ukraine's Dnipro advances to Europa League final for first time

Xinhua, May 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ukrainian soccer club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk roared into the final of the UEFA Europa League for the first time in its history, after a 1-0 home victory over Italy's Napoli on Thursday night.

The game was played before a sold-out crowd of around 70,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, where the football pitch was flooded owing to a heavy rain.

After their first leg 1-1 draw in Naples, the two teams were very cautious in their game.

For the hosts, a 0-0 draw would have been enough to advance to the final on the away goal, so the team from Dnipropetrovsk was slow and looked to run out the clock to preserve the result.

Napoli had better ball possession throughout the match, more shots at goal and more shots at target, but failed to score.

Eugene Seleznyov's 58th-minute header was the only goal of the match and the Ukrainian side advanced 2-1 on the aggregate.

On May 27, Dnipro will face Spain's Sevilla, the defending champion of the Europa League, in Warsaw. Enditem
