Cambodia arrests fugitive Russian tycoon Sergei Polonsky

Xinhua, May 15, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cambodia's National Military Police on Friday arrested Russian ex-billionaire Sergei Polonsky, who is wanted in his homeland for embezzlement, a spokesman confirmed.

"We had cooperated with the army to arrest Polonsky on the island of Damlong (in Preah Sihanouk province) at around 4:00 pm ( local time)," National Military Police spokesman Eng Hy told Xinhua over telephone. "But now, the Military Police have delivered him to the National Police to continue further action."

The arrest came after the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had asked the Ministry of Justice to review repeated request of extradition from Moscow. It precedes an official visit to Russia by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and other high-ranking officials.

Polonsky, 42, was charged in absentia in July 2012 as part of a criminal case involving the embezzlement of over 175 million U.S. dollars from the participants in an up-market cooperative residential construction project in central Moscow.

In April 2014, Cambodian Supreme Court ruled out a request to extradite Polonsky to Russia due to the lack of an extradition treaty between the two countries. Enditem
