Vietnam has instructed relevant agencies to make preparations for allowing big-capacity motorcycles to run on expressways on a trial basis, local newspaper Youth reported Thursday.
Riders of motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of over 175 cubic centimeters should be permitted to run on three expressways of Hanoi-Lao Cai, Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay and Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong on a trial basis, the Ho Chi Minh City-based newspaper quoted Transport Minister Dinh La Thang as saying.
Expressways in Vietnam are crowded only during holidays, he said, adding that other countries allow big-capacity motorcycles to be present on highways.
After the trial, relevant laws and regulations can be amended to allow big motorcycles to run on expressways nationwide if appropriate, Thang said.
According to statistics from the Vietnam Registry, 3,414 motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of over 175 cubic centimeters were imported into Vietnam between early March last year and early May this year. Ho Chi Minh City currently has 13,700 big-capacity motorcycles, accounting for 48 percent of the country's total, according to the city's Transport Police Bureau.
By the end of last year, there had been more than 43 million motorbikes on roads in Vietnam, making up over 85 percent of the country's means of transport, according to statistics from the Transport Ministry. Endi
