Xinhua, May 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

European member states granted protection status to about 185,000 asylum seekers in 2014, with Syrians remaining the main beneficiaries, according to the statistical office of the European Union (EU), Eurostat.

About 68,400 Syrian citizens, 14,600 Eritreans, and 14,100 Afghans received protection status in the EU in 2014. Together, these three citizenships accounted for more than half of all persons granted protection status in the EU last year.

In 2014, the highest numbers of persons granted protection status were registered in Germany, Sweden, France, and Italy.

Since 2008, more than 750,000 asylum seekers have been granted protection status in the EU.

According to Eurostat, protection status includes three different categories of protection, that is the person granted refugee status, the person granted subsidiary protection status and the person granted authorization to stay for humanitarian reasons. Endit
