Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher in early trading Monday on robust U.S. jobs data released last Friday.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 295.49 points, or 1.52 percent, from Friday to 19,674.68. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange soared 23.45 points, or 1.48 percent, to 1,611.21.

Major gainers included banks, securities and other financing business issues. Endi
