European leaders on Friday expressed their eagerness to keep Britain in the European Union (EU) when congratulating David Cameron on his Thursday re-election as prime minister.
Cameron has said he would possibly bring forward a planned referendum on Britain's membership in the EU in 2017 if his Conservative Party won the election.
Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, sent congratulatory messages to Cameron in a press release, saying "I wish to congratulate David Cameron on his re-appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following yesterday's elections."
"The United Kingdom plays a key role in ensuring that Europe has a common sense agenda," Tusk said, adding that, "I count on the new British Government making the case for the United Kingdom's continued membership of the EU."
Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, said, "I stand ready to work with you to strike a fair deal for the United Kingdom in the EU and look forward to your ideas and proposals in this regard" when sending his congratulations to Cameron on his victory in the British general election.
