Obama congratulates British PM on election victory

U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday congratulated British Prime Minister David Cameron on his election victory, pledging to continue cooperation on shared interests.

"I congratulate Prime Minister Cameron on his impressive electoral victory," the president said in a statement, as the premier and his Conservative Party defied the polls by securing a decisive majority in parliamentary elections a day earlier.

Hailing the "special and essential relationship" between Washington and London, Obama said he had "enjoyed working closely with Prime Minister Cameron on a range of shared interests these last several years," and looks forward to "continuing to strengthen the bonds between our countries, as we work together on behalf of global peace, security and prosperity."

Ahead of the British polls, The Washington Post lamented a U.S. ally that is "growing weaker, more inwardly focused and less willing or able to join in common endeavors." Endi
