Youngest MP since 350 years ago elected in British election

During the 2015 Britain General Election, 20-year-old politics student Mhairi Black defeated a Labour Party heavyweight in an electoral district to become the youngest MP since 1667.

Black, a member of Scottish National Party (SNP), defeated former shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander in Paisley and Renfrewshire South to become the youngest MP since the 17th century.

Alexander was not only a member of the shadow cabinet but also had election experience in abundance.

In the end, Black's 23,548 votes outstripped Alexander's 17,864 votes, marking the first time for 70 years that the constituency has not been a Labour seat.

But first, the young lady has to complete her university degree.

Reports said Black was a vocal supporter of Scottish independence during last year's referendum campaign.

She said: "Whether you voted for the SNP or not, and whatever your views are on Scotland's future, I will seek to represent you and everyone in this constituency to the very best of my ability."

"This election is about making the voice of this constituency and the whole of Scotland heard more effectively at Westminster than ever before," she added.

Reports said the Labour party suffered heavy losses at the hands of the emergent SNP in this election. SNP on Friday won by a historic landslide of 56 seats out of 59 seats for Scotland in the British general election. Endit
