Latvians remember end of WWII with commemorative events

A number of commemorative events were held across Latvia on Friday to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and remember victims of last century's bloodiest military conflict.

People gathered to lay flowers at soldiers' cemeteries in Riga and Latvia's regional towns and municipalities.

Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma arrived at the Salaspils Memorial, the former site of a Nazi concentration camp outside Riga, to honor the memory of people who died in the war.

"In the 21st century, this still is a tragic reminder of the past crimes we should never forget, and we must not let those awful crimes of World War II repeat again," the Latvian prime minister said in her speech.

"Unfortunately, even today, there are many places in Europe and in the world where conflicts have erupted and many innocent people are dying," she said. Endit
