Spain begins campaign for municipal, regional elections

Xinhua, May 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Friday sees the start of an intense two-week campaign in Spain ahead of the regional and municipal elections which will be held in the country on May 24.

Meanwhile, the governing Popular Party was given approval ratings of 25.6 percent in the latest opinion poll published Thursday.

The poll, carried out by the Center for Sociological Investigation, predicts that the PP will be the biggest party in nine of the 13 autonomous communities which are voting in Spain.

The Socialist Party (PSOE) is expected to become the largest party in the region of Extremadura.

The PP also looks to be in for a difficult time in some of the most important town halls, remaining the main party, but losing its majority in major cities such as Madrid and Valencia.

With a general election to be held in Spain by November at the latest, the regional and local vote on May 24 will be another indicator of who could form a central government at the end of the year.

These are also the first elections on a national scale to be held since the eruption in popularity of the center-right Citizens party and the left-wing collective Podemos.

With polls predicting the two parties will capture 13.8 percent and 16.5 percent of the vote respectively, they could hold the balance of power in many regions. Endit
