Two leftist rebels killed in S. Philippine clash

Xinhua, May 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least two suspected leftist rebels were killed in fighting with government troops in southern Philippines on Friday, the military said.

Soldiers also seized hundreds of rounds from AK-47 assault rifle and voluminous subversive documents following the raid of a suspected New People's Army (NPA) encampment in the Mount Kitanglad forests in Libona town in northern Mindanao's Bukidnon province, said Jesse Alvarez, commander of the army's 403rd Infantry Brigade.

The three-hour operation which started around 2 a.m. by the army's elite 1st Special Forces Company targeted the alleged hideout of NPA's Front 68, Alvarez said, adding soldiers fought about 30 heavily-armed guerrillas.

No one among the government troops were wounded in the operation, said the army official. Pursuit operations against the fleeing rebels were immediately launched, he added.

The 4,000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is fighting a leftist insurgency in 60 Philippine provinces since 1969. Endi
