(Sports) Vietnam to attend World Taekwondo Championships

Nine Vietnamese taekwondo fighters will vie for medals at the 2015 WTF World Taekwondo Championships from May 12-18 in Russia, a senior official of the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation told Xinhua here Wednesday.

"At the biennial tournament in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, our four male contestants will compete at the weight categories of 54, 58, 68 and 74kg; and our five female athletes at the categories of 46, 49, 57, 62 and 67kg," said Nguyen Thanh Huy, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation.

Vietnamese athletes will perform at their full capacity, because good results will give them higher chances of securing berths to 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil, said the Deputy Secretary General. He is also Standing Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Taekwondo Federation that was established in January.

Huy explained that the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) will calculate result points for contestants partaking in Olympic weight categories at the WTF World Taekwondo Championships.

Huy said that the nine Vietnamese taekwondo athletes include Nguyen Dinh Cuong, Nguyen Van Duy, Phan Trung Duc, Hong Minh Cao, Truong Thi Kim Tuyen, Nguyen Thi Uyen, Pham Thi Thu Hien, Ha Thi Nguyen and Chu Hoang Dieu Linh.

Vietnam gained no medals at the 2013 WTF World Taekwondo Championships in Mexico, and won one bronze medal at the 2011 edition in South Korea.

Vietnam has set a target of bagging home three or four taekwondo gold medals at the approaching 28th SEA Games in Singapore, announced the country's General Department of Sports and Physical Training. From June 12-16, Vietnamese taekwondo fighters will clash with strong rivals from Thailand, the Philippines and host Singapore.
