Myanmar to increase CNG supply for vehicles

Xinhua, May 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar authorities will increase the supply of compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles to meet the country's growing demand, official media reported on Wednesday.

The factory for refining natural gas from off-shore blocks is nearly to be completed and many vehicles will be supplied with CNG without delay, said the Global New Light of Myanmar.

While private CNG vehicles are facing scarcity of the gas, at least an additional 230 vehicles are on the waiting list, according to statistics.

The Ministry of Energy is supplying natural gas from inland blocks to car owners and drivers, giving priority to public buses.

At present, some 3,500 buses are operating in more than 360 bus lines in Yangon, carrying about 2 million people a day.

Myanmar is abundant in natural gas resources especially in the offshore areas.

The country produced 3.1 million barrels of crude oil and 8.6 billion cubic meters natural gas in the first six months (April- September) of fiscal 2014-15, according to the Central Statistical Organization.

Foreign investment in Myanmar's oil and gas sector amounted to 17.592 billion U.S. dollars as of the end of February 2015, accounting for 32.53 percent of the total and ranking the second largest sectorally in the country's foreign investment line-up after electric power, statistics show. Endi
