Bulgaria seizes over 500 kg of marijuana at border with Greece

Xinhua, May 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian law enforcement officers have seized 530 kg of marijuana at Kulata checkpoint on the country's border with Greece, officials said on Monday.

The smuggled drug, split into 270 pressed and vacuumed packages, was found Wednesday last week under the floor of a semi-trailer of a Bulgaria-registered truck entering from Greece, the Ministry of Interior said in a press release.

The driver, a Greek citizen, declared that he was carrying plastic goods, the ministry said.

The drug seizure was conducted within an international investigation directed against a criminal organization dealing with the trafficking and distribution of narcotics in the countries of the European Union, the ministry said.

Authorities estimated the value of the seized marijuana on the black market would be some 2.8 million U.S. dollars.

Bulgaria is a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe. In 2014, the Balkan country seized more than one tonne of heroin, 50 tonnes of marijuana, 0.1 tonne of cocaine and half a tonne of synthetic drugs. Endit
