S.Korean carmakers'global sales fall in April on weak exports

Global car sales by South Korean automakers inched down last month on weak exports, industry data showed Monday.

Car sales at home and abroad, by five domestic automakers including Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Samsung and Sssangyong, totaled 797,839 units in April, down 0.6 percent from a year earlier.

Local auto sales increased 2.9 percent from a year earlier to 133,935 units in April, but exports slid 1.3 percent to 663,904 units.

Renault Samsung showed outstanding performance. The carmaker sold 7,018 vehicles in the domestic market in April, up 14.1 percent from a year earlier, thanks to popularity for the QM3 model. Its auto exports surged 156.3 percent to 16,375 units.

Top automaker Hyundai Motor saw both local and overseas sales decline in April. On a yearly basis, local car sales slid 4.3 percent to 63,050 units in April, with exports inching down 0.1 percent to 373,809 units.

Domestic auto sales by the No.2 automaker Kia Motors jumped 10. 4 percent in April from a year earlier due to demand for Sorento and Carnival, but exports declined 3.4 percent on weak demand from Russia.

Global car sales by GM Korea tumbled 12.1 percent on-year in April, but Ssangyong showed outperformance in domestic car sales, which surged 35.3 percent last month. Endi
