Checkpoint skirmish kills 5, wounds 7 in Afghanistan

Xinhua, May 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

About five militants were killed in a clash in eastern Afghanistan's province of Nangarhar on Sunday, said the provincial government.

"Several militants attacked security checkpoints in Trili area of Bati Kot district early Sunday morning. The Afghan Local Police (ALP) forces repelled the attack. The clash lasted for a while and left five militants killed," it said in a statement.

The government established the ALP, or community police, in 2010 to protect villages and districts around the country where army and police have limited presence.

Up to four ALP personnel and three militants were wounded during the clash in the province, 120 km east of Afghan capital of Kabul, according to the statement.

"The security forces seized three guns, a rocket launcher and a vehicle following the fighting," the statement said.

The Taliban-led militancy has been rampant since mid-April when the militant group launched a yearly rebel offensive against Afghan security forces. Endi
