Medical facilities paralyzed in Nepal's quake-hit areas

Xinhua, May 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

A majority of health facilities in Nepal's quake-affected areas, including Sindupalchok and Gorkha, have sustained damage in the April 25 earthquake.

An assessment by the World Health Organization and Nepal's Ministry of Health said on Sunday that district hospitals in Ramechhap, Nuwakot, Sindupalchok and Rasuwa have been dysfunctional.

A situation report released by the United Nation Nepal office showed that 90 percent of health facilities located in the worst- hit areas have been severely damaged.

Meanwhile, people in remote areas of the worst-affected districts are still expecting medical aid, though medical teams have set up camps at relatively accessible locations.

Nepalese health authorities said some 50 national and international medical teams have so far been assigned to the quake- hit districts.

Death toll from the devastating quake has climbed to 7,000 as rescuers and health workers are scrambling to avoid a second tragedy like the cholera outbreak that killed thousands more in Haiti after an earthquake in 2010. Endi
