Australia's east coast bracing for severe storm

Xinhua, May 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Emergency workers from around Australia are preparing to shore up exhausted local personnel on the country's east coast as the third severe storm in 12 days hits the coast on Friday.

Widespread flooding along 13 river systems already inundated by drenching rainfall is expected to flood on Friday night and the weekend in northern New South Wales and southeast Queensland.

Evacuations are expected as up to 400 millimeters of rain is tipped to tumble down into already rain-fall swollen catchments.

Emergency service personnel, mainly trained volunteers, have been working non-stop for almost two weeks, and their numbers are being bolstered with help flown in from around Australia on Friday.

The east-coast low pressure weather system is dumping the rain on at least 1,500 kilometers of coast-land in eastern Australia.

It has been estimated that so far more than 300,000 Australian dollars worth of damage has been caused over the past 12 days, with some communities swept away and several deaths attributed to the wild weather. Endi
