Slovenian FM to attend WWII celebration in Moscow

Xinhua, May 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec will attend World War II celebrations in Russia on behalf of President Borut Pahor, the president's office said on Thursday.

Erjavec will take part in all commemorative events in Moscow on May 9 to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII.

The European Council previously asked EU member states not to send senior officials to attend the military parade in Moscow.

Instead of the celebrations in Moscow, Pahor will attend a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII in Ljubljana.

Slovenia observed Resistance Day earlier this week, remembering the founding of the Liberation Front of the Slovenian Nation, a central resistance organization of Slovenians during World War II.

Slovenia was occupied by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during WWII. More than 97,000 people were killed in the bloody war, according to the Ljubljana-based Institute of Contemporary History. Endit
