Syrian airstrikes kill 10 people in Idlib province: activists

Xinhua, April 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Syrian air force carried out multiple airstrikes against several rebel-held areas in northwestern province of Idlib, killing 10 people, a monitor group reported.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said children were among those killed by the strikes that targeted the town of Mouzara in Jabal al-Zawyieh region and the city of Binnesh in the countryside of Idlib.

The UK-based watchdog group said the death toll could rise due to the large number of critically wounded people.

Other opposition activists posted an online video, showing scenes of destruction caused by the airstrikes in Binnesh. Other video also showed the progress made by militants, who captured the village of Hursh Msaibin, which they said would enable them to cut the road between the government-controlled towns of Mastumeh and Ariha.

In April, Syrian government forces lost the provincial capital of Idlib and the strategic city of Jisr al-Shughour in the countryside of Idlib, close to Turkish borders.

The wide-scale offensive by the Nusra and allied militants stretched to the al-Ghab Plains, the south of Jisr al-Shughour.

The Observatory said battles continued Wednesday in the al-Ghab Plains in countryside of the central province of Hama.

The captured areas were located on the supply route to the Syrian army in central and northern Syria.

The Syrian army is reportedly on a counter-offensive to retake the strategic locations it lost to the extremist groups.

On Tuesday, the state news agency SANA said the government troops killed as many as 60 militants in the countryside of Idlib. Endit
