Number of homes for elderly hits 31,800 in China

The number of registered homes for the the senior citizens in China reached 31,833 by the end of March, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs Wednesday.

Chen Rifa, spokesman for the ministry, told a press conference that there were about 5.84 million beds in these homes.

The figure represents about 27.5 beds for every 1,000 senior citizens, an increase of 10 percent from last March.

The number of senior citizens in China surpassed 200 million in 2013 and is expected to hit 248 million by 2020.

To cope with the challenges of an aging society, the ministry called for better financing and more beds to be made available. Endi
