Nazarbayev sworn in as Kazakh president

Xinhua, April 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev was sworn in Wednesday to begin his next term as the head of state.

"I solemnly swear that I will faithfully serve the people of Kazakhstan, strictly observe the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan, guarantee the rights and freedoms of the citizens, honestly perform the high duties of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan entrusted to me," the 74-year-old politician said at the inauguration ceremony.

In a following speech, Nazarbayev outlined the five priorities in his next term -- to increase the percentage of the middle class, to develop a single internal market, to fight corruption, to create new jobs and to strengthen the unity of the nation.

He said a national commission on modernization will be created.

Nazarbayev was re-elected as Kazakh president in a snap presidential election on April 26, winning more than 97.7 percent of the vote.

Nazarbayev has been the first and so far the only Kazakh president since the country's independence in 1991. He has kept a support rate of more than 90 percent in all previous elections.

The Kazakh parliament approved an amendment in 2007, allowing Nazarbayev's unlimited participation in future presidential elections. Endi
