10 mln odd part-time workers underemployed in EU: Eurostat

Xinhua, April 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Of the 44.1 million persons in the European Union (EU) working part-time in 2014, 9.8 million were underemployed, meaning that they wished to work more hours but were unavailable to do so, according to an article published by EU's statistical office Eurostat on Monday.

The data was based on detailed results of the 2014 European Labor Force Survey.

A large majority of part-time workers being underemployed in the EU were women, accounting for 67 percent of the total.

In 2014, the proportion of underemployed part-time workers among total part-time workers varied significantly across EU member states. A majority of part-time workers wishing to work more hours were in Greece, Cyprus and Spain.

The Netherlands registered by far the smallest share of underemployed part-time workers, followed by Luxembourg, Denmark, Estonia and the Czech Republic.

Eurostat emphasized that underemployed part-time workers were predominantly women in every EU member state, except Romania and Slovakia. Endit
