Around 170,000 workers plan to rally on May Day in Indonesia

Around 170,000 workers plan to stage rally in Jakarta on May Day to express their demand to the government, the labor confederation said here on Monday.

Andi Gani Nena Wea, president of labor confederation across Indonesia said that more than one million others would also took to the street in the cities out of Jakarta.

In Jakarta, the labors would stage rally outside the State Palace and the National Sport Stadium, said Andi.

"As many as 170,000 labors will take to the streets in Jakarta and millions outside Jakarta," he said at national police headquarters after the meeting with police chief.

Andi said that the workers would avoid violence during the rally and keep it peaceful.

"We guarantee that May Day will be peaceful. It is the momentum to improve welfare. It is not necessary to be cautioned", he added.

Among the issues to be raised are pay hike, pension, and diminishing of outsourcing system, according to him.

On the same occasion, Police chief Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti stressed that the police would take a stern action should labors engage in violence or blocking toll roads.

He asked the workers to keep their commitment to keep the rally peaceful, avoid violence and not to blockade the toll roads.

Pay hike, improvement of welfare and diminishing outsourcing system are among the main demands echoed by labors every year in May Day activities in Indonesia. Endi
