Some 72 Taliban militants have been killed and 48 wounded as the Afghan security forces pressed ahead with offensives in restive provinces, the Defense Ministry said on Monday morning.

"Security forces carried out several military operations throughout the country within the past 24 hours, killing 72 armed militants, wounding 48 and detaining three others," the ministry said in a statement providing daily operational updates.

About five army personnel were also killed in direct enemy's firings and landmine explosions over the same period, according to the statement.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make comments.
