"Buy local" campaign kicks off in Algeria

Xinhua, April 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Algeria on Sunday kicked off an awareness campaign to encourage the consumption of local products instead of imported ones.

The nationwide one-week campaign will promote local products, including household appliances, electronic devices, food stuff and handicraft.

"In terms of food and fresh agricultural products, we have a wide range of products, and their quality is highly competitive (compared with those imported from foreign countries). The same is true for electrical and electronic products," said Abdelaziz Ait Abderrahmane, a senior official from the Ministry of Commerce.

The campaign is part of the government effort to curb the country's soaring imports bill, at a time when the country is also feeling the pinch of falling oil prices.

By the end of the first quarter, Algeria had recorded a trade deficit of 1.73 billion U.S. dollars. It had a surplus of 1.83 billion U.S. dollars at the same time last year. Endi
