UN chief calls on stakeholders in Togo to ensure peaceful election

On the eve of the presidential election in Togo, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday called on all national stakeholders to recommit themselves to ensuring a peaceful, free and transparent election.

Togo is going to hold its 2015 presidential election on April 25th, in which Faure Gnassingbe, incumbent head of state of Togo, is seeking a third presidential term since he took office in 2005.

"The Secretary-General calls on all political leaders and their supporters to resolve any disputes that may arise from the electoral process through constitutional and peaceful means," said a statement released by Ban's spokesperson.

Ban also reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to support the electoral process and the efforts of the Togolese to strengthen democratic order in their country, said the statement.

Five candidates are recorded for the presidential election, including Jean-Pierre Fabre of Combat for Change in 2015 (CAP 2015) , a main challenger of Gnassingbe. Endite
