Ugandan army says ready to wipe out rebels in eastern DR Congo

Xinhua, April 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Ugandan army is ready to wipe out the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), local media reported on Wednesday.

The state-owned New Vision quoted Uganda's Defense Minister, Crispus Kiyonga, as saying the army is ready to carry out the offensive against the Ugandan rebels as long as Kinshasa grants them permission to cross the border.

"If President (Joseph) Kabila invites us to go to the DR Congo to help fight the ADF, we are prepared to do so," Kiyonga was quoted as saying.

The ADF have continued to commit killings of civilians, rapes, abductions and lootings, despite the Congolese military hunting them.

Eighteen civilians were killed last week by the ADF near the town of Beni in DR Congo, according to a United Nations source.

Kiyonga said the Ugandan troops are working closely with the Congolese army to end the threat.

The ADF formed in the mid-1990s in the Ruwenzori mountains in western Uganda and is believed to have killed more than 260 people in last three months of 2014 in eastern DR Congo. Endi
