2nd LD: Kyrgyz prime minister tenders resignation

Xinhua, April 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Kyrgyz Prime Minister Joomart Otorbayev tendered his resignation Thursday, the government's press service said.

Otorbayev announced the decision after delivering his government work report for 2014 at a parliament session.

"I am resigning voluntarily," he said. "There are many qualified candidates for the position in the country, and I believe the majority coalition will be able to find someone who will work better to promote national development."

Otorbayev, who was named prime minister in April 2014, did not give any specific reasons for his resignation.

It was reported that Otorbayev has been criticized by the opposition in Parliament for his failure to properly solve the issue of shareholdings related to the Kumtor gold mine, the largest one in Kyrgyzstan, and the opposition has demanded his resignation.

Under the Kyrgyz Constitution, the majority coalition will have to nominate a candidate for premiership for parliament approval within 15 days. Endi
