Belgian police clamp down on traffic offenders

Xinhua, April 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Police in Belgium will increase the number of speed traps on the roads on Thursday.

The so-called "flash marathon" is part of an effort to clamp down on traffic offences such as speeding.

The police announced the action last week following Belgium's participation in a Europe-wide flash marathon with 21 other countries.

However, with added police needed for an emergency EU summit in Brussels, as well as some members of the police unions taking industrial action over pension reform, the exact scale of the flash marathon remains to be seen, reports De Standaard.

"At the previous strike action during the marathon flash, about half of the employees participated in the strike, and we expect that this time around will be the same," said Vincent Houssin of the VSOA trade union.

On April 16, Belgium participated in a cross-border flash marathon involving 22 countries, which saw an increased number of speed traps on European roads. Around 30,000 vehicles were checked as a result of the action. Enditem
