UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday condemned the wave of anti-foreigner violence in South Africa which has resulted in the deaths of at least seven people in the past few weeks.
Thousands of people have been displaced in the current wave of xenophobic violence with immigrants from other African countries being the most affected.
Ban urged that all efforts are made to avert future attacks, including any incitement leading thereto, and encourages peaceful solutions, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a daily briefing here.
"He welcomes the public expressions of the many South Africans who have been calling for peaceful coexistence and harmony with foreign nationals," said Dujarric.
Earlier on Wednesday, South Africa's troops have been deployed to help curb violence in anti-foreigner hotspots. And on the day, South African President Jacob Zuma met with stakeholders in the country to discuss migration policy in a bid to ensure attacks on foreign nationals do not recur in the future. Endite
