Armenia holds int'l forum on genocide prior to anniversary

Xinhua, April 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

An international forum called "Against Genocide Crime" kicked off Wednesday in Yerevan, capital of Armenia, as an event to commemorate the centenary of the Armenian Genocide.

The forum plans to study a wide range of issues concerning genocide as a global threat for the harmonious and peaceful coexistence of peoples and to identify legal and political aspects to prevent new crimes against humanity.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan opened the forum and stressed in his speech that recognition and condemnation of past genocides plays a huge role in the prevention of new ones.

He also said that modern civilizations should unite to end genocide for good and eliminate the soil that allows such crime to ferment.

Council of Europe Secretary-General Thorbjoern Jagland and President of the International Association of Genocide Daniel Feierstein also delivered speeches.

The forum was attended by more than 600 participants from Armenia and other countries.

Armenia and Turkey disagree over the Armenian Genocide, in which 1.5 million Armenians in Ottoman Turkey were killed and persecuted in 1915-1923. Turkey has rejected the allegations that it was a bloody massacre.

Now more than 20 countries have officially recognized the facts of the Armenian Genocide.

Armenians across the world will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1915 genocide on April 24. Endi
