China welcomes end of Yemen air raids

Xinhua, April 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

China on Wednesday welcomed the end of a campaign of air strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen and called for political negotiation in the country.

"We hope all sides can implement the UN Security Council resolution and initiatives of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), resume negotiations as soon as possible, find a political solution that accords with Yemen's situation and takes care of all sides' concerns, so as to bring stability and legitimate order back to Yemen at an early date," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said at a daily press briefing, commenting on the Saudi-led coalition's decision to end the strikes on Tuesday.

The coalition has been running air raids against Houthis since March 26 and now says it will launch a campaign aimed at protecting civilians and fighting terrorism, resuming the political process, evacuating foreigners from Yemen and providing Yemenis with humanitarian aid.

It said the air raids had destroyed Houthi heavy weaponry and eliminated threats against Saudi Arabia and the region. Endi
