Tokyo stocks open higher tracking overseas markets gains

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early trading Tuesday, tracking overnight gains in U.S. and European markets.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 77.58 points, or 0.40 percent, from Monday to 19,712.07. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 9.96 points, or 0.63 percent, to 1,592.64.

All 33 industry groups were higher with the exception of shipping, with rubber, banks and pharmaceuticals among the biggest gainers. Endi
