UN's Kutesa says China plan adds dynamism to new global development agenda

Xinhua, April 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

UN General Assembly President Sam Kutesa on Monday spoke highly of China's initiative of "One belt, One road," saying it helps to create opportunity and momentum for realization of the new global development agenda beyond 2015.

Kutesa made known his opinion in his opening remarks while addressing a forum held at the UN Headquarters in New York City on the Belt and Road initiative and also a new model of international cooperation.

Calling the plan an important reminder that successful development of each country is linked to the economic growth of others, Kutesa also said he hopes this initiative will facilitate practical economic cooperation and development of all countries along the routes, most of which are developing countries.

"It is significant that this initiative also aims at facilitating people-to-people exchanges," said Kutesa, adding that China's advocacy of inclusiveness and mutual learning among civilizations resonates with the UN's appeal.

The Belt and Road Initiative, which refers to creating the modern Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road to boost international trade and expand global economic ties, was proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping when he visited Central Asia and Southeast Asia in September and October of 2013.

The Belt and Road routes run through the continents of Asia, Europe and Africa, connecting vibrant East Asia economic circle at one end and developed European economic circle at the other.

While noting that China has played a crucial role in advancing South-South cooperation and also has provided long-term support for developing countries, Kutesa said the initiative, with the vision of strengthening integration through enhancing infrastructure development and increasing trade, is conducive to the post-2015 development agenda and South-South cooperation as well.

"Coming from the developing world and Africa in particular, I can say that China's 'Belt and Road' initiative and Africa's development strategy in the 21st Century share the same vision of strengthening integration through infrastructure development and increasing trade," Kutesa said. "Combining the two strategies therefore will create opportunities and momentum for the realization of the new global development agenda beyond 2015." Endite
