Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday urged the South African government to contain xenophobic violence against foreigners.

He also appealed to Mozambican citizens not to attempt to take revenge against South African citizens living and working in Mozambique.

"We call for non-retaliation, a noble characteristic of Mozambicans," Nyusi said.

Three Mozambique nationals have died as victims of violence in South Africa, among a death toll of seven till Monday.
