Zambia's Permanent Representative to the UN Mwaba Kasese-Botha was elected chairperson of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development, an official statement said Monday.
Kasese-Botha was elected chairperson by consensus without a vote after her nomination by the African Group during the conclusion of the 48th session of the Commission on Population Development in New York, according to the statement released by First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at Zambia's Permanent Mission to the UN, Chibaula Silwamba.
The Zambian envoy was nominated as the candidate for Africa and would be deputized by four vice-chairpersons from other regional groups, he added.
The Commission on Population and Development is composed of 47 member states elected by the Economic and Social Council for a period of four years on the basis of geographic distribution. Under its terms of reference, the Commission assists the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) by arranging for studies and advising the Council on population issues and trends.
Zambia also serves as chair of the Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and vice-president of the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) executive board. Endi
