U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday discussed with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) an array of challenges facing the Middle East.
In their meeting at the White House, Obama and the crown prince discussed the conflicts in Yemen, Libya, Iraq and Syria, as the UAE is joining the airstrikes on the Islamic State extremist group both inside Iraq and Syria as well as on the Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The two also talked about the ongoing efforts to reach a "long- term, comprehensive" deal with Iran to ensure that the Islamic Republic does not acquire a nuclear weapon, the White House said in a statement.
A new round of talks is scheduled to start in the Austrian capital of Vienna on Wednesday, after a framework pact was sealed on April 2 following intense negotiations between Iran and the six major powers -- the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany.
Obama and the crown prince reaffirmed their commitment to close defense and security cooperation, including in combating the Islamic State and al-Qaida, the White House said.
Obama is scheduled to host on May 13-14 leaders from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council first at the White House and then at Camp David, a presidential retreat in the state of Maryland. Endite
