Macedonian tobacco output slips 20 pct due to devastating flood

Xinhua, April 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Macedonian overall tobacco output slid 20 per cent to 24,857 tons compared with the same period of last year and did not reach the projected 30,000 tons due to the devastating flood which wracked the area in this February, Macedonian chamber of commerce informed on Monday.

Due to the floods, the moister in 20 percent of total tobacco leaves rose to 30 percent which led to a downgrade of the quality of the recoverable tobacco as a fourth class, according to local media.

Although the soil used to plant tobacco has been reduced by 30 percent to 14,030 hectares, the planters are intending to shrink tobacco-cultivating land further by raising other agricultural plant provided the bad profit this year.

The whole tobacco output is estimated to reach 50.8 million U.S. dollars and the planters are projected to receive subsidies of around 15.3 million U.S. dollars, Vladimir Ristevski from Macedonian chamber of commerce said. Endit
