UN urges Cote d'Ivoire to hold peaceful 2015 presidential polls

Head of the United Nations Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (ONUCI) Aichatou Mindaoudou on Sunday urged Cote d'Ivoire to hold peaceful presidential elections in October 2015, noting that this will help to return the country among the community of nations.

"This will be the first presidential elections since the post- election violence," she said, reiterating that the UN Security Council had given ONUCI the mandate to do everything to support Cote d'Ivoire to hold free, fair, transparent and democratic elections.

"We shall not spare any effort in helping the authorities to create a favorable environment for holding peaceful elections," she noted, adding that ONUCI will play its part to ensure the elections are successful.

The last presidential election held in 2010 resulted into a political crisis that last several months, after which Alassane Ouattara was sworn in as the president on May 21, 2011.

The 2010-2011 post election violence led to the loss of some 3, 000 lives and displacement of over a million people. Endi
