Communist Party of India (Marxist) elects new general secretary

The Communist Party of India ( Marxist) on Sunday elected senior leader Sitaram Yechury as its new general secretary.

At the last day of the party's 21st Congress here, Yechury, 62, said it was resolved to strengthen the party to meet the challenges faced by the country.

At the meeting of the new Central Committee, outgoing general secretary Prakash Karat proposed Yechury's name. The 91-member highest executive body of the party unanimously voted Yechury's as the party chief.

Karat, who headed the party for a decade, later made the formal announcement in front of the media at the end of the six-day congress. Endi
