Ethiopian Christians executed by IS in Libya: video

Xinhua, April 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Islamic State (IS) militant group on Sunday released a video purportedly showing its affiliates executing about 30 Ethiopian Christians in Libya.

Footage shows the victims were killed by two groups of IS militant, one called "Fezzan Province" and another "Barka Province."

The video went viral on social media websites and were re-tweeted by several Libyan militant groups loyal to IS.

So far, no Libyan officials can verify the authenticity of the video.

Libya, a major oil producer in North Africa, has been witnessing a frayed political process after former leader Muammar Gaddafi was toppled during the 2011 political turmoil.

The country is now deadlocked in a dogfight between the pro-secular army and Islamist militants, which has caused a security vacuum for homegrown extremism to brew.

Some IS affiliates have taken the chance and seized cities Sirte and Derna.

On February, IS released a similar video showing that 21 captive Coptic Christians from Egypt were beheaded by a Libyan branch of the extremist group. Endit
