Ireland inks agreement to boost investment in Cuba

Xinhua, April 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cuba and Ireland Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Havana, aimed at increasing Irish investment in Cuba's aviation, telecommunications, health, food and security sectors.

Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra Diaz and Niall Burgess, secretary general of the Irish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, signed the MoU to establish a mechanism for political consultation, the Havana-based news agency Prensa Latina reported.

The agreement represents "a very important step for strengthening our cooperation in the areas of culture, trade (and) investment, and also in political dialogue," said Burgess.

Hailing the Cuban-U.S. and Cuban-European efforts to normalize ties, the Irish official said it was an honor to be in Cuba "at a time when major changes are occurring in the region."

Cuba and Ireland established diplomatic ties 15 years ago, based on cooperation and mutual respect. Endi
